Hong Kong's role as the wine trading and distribution hub of Asia was boosted recently by the removal of duty on wine, making Hong Kong the only major economy to have no wine duties and no sales tax.
January to September import figures showed that Hong Kong's wine imports are soaring; they were up 87% over the same period in 2007.
By 2012, the Asian market (excluding Japan) is estimated to double, reaching US$17 billion in value and rising by 10 to 20% each year. By 2017 its worth is estimated to reach US$27 billion. The Chinese mainland and Hong Kong comprise more than 60% of Asia's wine market and will become the world's eighth largest market.
Highly Successful First Edition
Access to this vast potential is through the HKTDC Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair. The debut event in 2008 brought 240 exhibitors from 25 countries and regions into contact with 8,758 trade visitors from 55 countries and regions, and 10,096 public visitors.
Of the visitors from outside Hong Kong, the top ranked visiting country was the Chinese mainland, to which Hong Kong is the gateway.
Hong Kong is ideally positioned for this annual fair as it has no wine or spirits production of its own and thus impartially supports the promotion of these from all over the world.
