Mechanical services and vibration
From symphonic concert halls to major sporting stadiums, Marshall Day Acoustics has acted as acoustic consultants for a vast range of Australian and international projects including the following:
Completed in time for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Marshall Day Acoustics were commissioned to consult on the acoustics for the Beijing Television Theatre; a television theatre created with a uniquely flexible format, allowing it to transform readily from theatre to studio to concert hall. Simultaneously Marshall Day Acoustics were busy on the design team for one of the most important cultural buildings proposed this century – the Philharmonie de Paris. Working closely with eminent French architect Jean Nouvel, a Marshall Day Acoustics team spent two weeks in Paris developing the acoustics design concept of the 2,400 seat concert hall, attending intensive workshop sessions with the architects and other consultants.
“Completion of the Philharmonie de Paris is expected in 2012 with Marshall Day Acoustics’ input almost complete,” says Peter. “We’ve worked collaboratively with the architects to come up with the ideal shape, form and acoustic design for this stunning concert hall.”
Marshall Day Acoustics were also appointed as acoustic consultants for the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium Project – the spectacular new 30,000-seat soccer and rugby stadium project in Melbourne’s Olympic Park. Their brief included complete architectural acoustics, environmental noise control and sound system design.
Being involved in such a wide range of high profile international projects is testimony to Marshall Day Acoustics’ skill and reputation. When asked the key to the success of Marshall Day Acoustics, Peter believes it stems from the company’s technological capabilities and the calibre of its people.
“We make sure that we are at the cutting edge of technology, tackling our projects in the most creative and technically advanced ways possible. People too, are our success. Marshall Day Acoustics is a coveted place to work because of the projects we attract. We get the very best people wanting to come and work with us. Staff training and retention is something we are very proud of. A lot of people have worked here for over ten years and some like me, for over twenty. That enables us to offer our clients an extremely talented and stable design team.”
Next for Marshall Day Acoustics is a broad spectrum of projects that includes Melbourne’s $130 million Southbank Cultural Precinct Redevelopment, specifically the refurbishment of Hamer Hall. There is also ongoing work with the Sydney Opera House as well as consulting on the acoustics for the Heath Ledger Centre, a major new performing arts venue in Perth. Peter sees the future as very positive for Marshall Day Acoustics.
“There are always opportunities and as a company we believe in maximising those opportunities. Marshall Day Acoustics has a strong identity as an independent acoustic consulting firm in Australia. Our plan is to continue to run a good business and to take advantage of the opportunities out there.”
Establishing a Marshall Day Acoustics office in Bahrain recently was one of those opportunities seized, even though it occurred during a tenuous economic time. “We decided to explore opportunities in the Middle East and we considered that an office in Bahrain was appropriate. We have now won two major projects in the region and are excited by the prospects”
Likewise, the design of performing arts centres and the associated entertainment technology is still an area with the need for a strong consulting company. Marshall Day Acoustics has created another opportunity by expanding into theatre design, with their new company Marshall Day Entertech.
“Marshall Day Acoustics offers a diverse range of skills for a speciality company. Thanks to that diversity there will always be something going on.”
